“The monotony and solitude of quiet life stimulates the creative mind”
Living in a society where we are constantly on the go leaves little time for reflection. What makes this even worse is that we are often spending time with a variety of people from all walks of life; except one, ourselves.
What is solitude and how can it help me?
Solitude is known as the state or situation of being alone. People deem this to be a scary prospect, and in all honesty they are right. To retreat into isolation and spend some time alone, without any distractions, can bring all sorts of emotions and feelings to the fore. Individuals seldom manage to hold their own (initially) in this aspect of life.
However, solitude is not a life long thing and it doesn’t have to be either. Periods of silence + non distraction are essential to peace of mind. The famous quote ‘Know Thyself’ attributes its success to solitude.
Spending time alone will mean you are actively taking time to face yourself in all your unseen nakedness. It means you will be confronting your inner demons (and angels!), it means you will become more calm, it will allow you to slowwww down. Many people have found their true purpose in life through solitude. Think about it this way, would you rather live a life constantly busy with endless things to do but at the end of still feel a void? Or you would rather spend a life alone, with no one but yourself meaning you can know who you truly are? The answer… neither! You should aim for both, maintain your life as it is whilst introducing periods of solitude (daily), and you will begin to reap the full rewards.
How to practice solitude
- Reading books
- Thinking – with a pen and paper nearby.
- Nature walks
- Laying down before Sleep
No one is saying you need to go from the busy club to the park bench and remain there. But what I am saying is that solitude is essential to knowledge of thyself. Aim to dive deep into the unknown, it will be hard, but it will certainly help.
